In anticipation of the Hearthstone North American Android release, I decided to give it a shot to see what all this fuss is about. I personally have never been much of a card game fan, and even though I had all 150 Pokemon Cards, I never played (at least by the rules of the game), but seeing as I’ve just started a Gaming site I thought I should broaden my interests and see what happens. The first thing I learned was that I’m horrible at card games. Hearthstone is a very basic easy to understand game, but as a novice I was still getting my head around the game mechanics. You start with having to play through a tutorial quest line, battling other “Masters” that teach you the ways of the game, and by the end you get to unlock and create your own decks and choose between unlocking more heroes, who are you play avatar’s, or facing the public. After the tutorial quests I decided to venture into the online play and instantly got my arse handed to me. It’s not that my opponent was more skillful than myself, I just made some stupid decisions, and I realized all of them seconds after making them.
I was lucky enough to pick the game up after it’s first expansion which got me 3 card packs from the new Goblins VS Gnomes as a sign of “Here’s something free that will hopefully get you to buy more”. This is where I mention the fact that Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft is a FTP (Free To Play) game, with reasonably priced micro-transactions. In the fully free game you get a starter deck, and as you complete quests you get either card parks directly, or Gold you can use to purchase individual packs. Outside of that you can purchase packs ranging from 2pks for $2.99 – 60pks for $69.99, every pack includes 5 cards with 1 guaranteed Rare or better. You can also purchase the Curse of Naxxramas which is an adventure mode, much like a normal story mode in other non-card based games, for $24.99. Seeing as the game is free $25 for a full adventure add on definitely seems reasonable.
Do I see myself spending any money on the game, probably not, but I don’t plan on just letting sit on my PC gathering dust. I enjoyed the gameplay, and with it being free it’s an easy sell for most of my friends. I also plan to stream my horrible gameplay over on the Space Time Taco Twitch Channel. I say go out there, battle your friends, and enjoy the fast pace, entertaining, paper-cut-less card game that is Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft.
