In a not too surprising turn of events, the release of Adult Swim’s Pocket Mortys was released a full day ahead of schedule. I’ve had about an hour or so with the game and I already love it. It’s one of the few mobile titles I’ve ever played that I didn’t uninstall minutes after opening, and that is largely due to the amazing blend of Pokemon style gameplay and Rick and Morty’s screwed up vision of the world.

Look at this Smug Rick

The game starts with the duo in the garage/lab, Rick working on a device to track the different Mortys throughout the multiverse, and Morty already thinking of what could possibly be wrong…Interrupted by one of Rick’s counterparts, your tutorial starts. After learning the basics we get to the plot, The Council of Ricks (as standins for the Elite 4) take your Portal gun and tell you the only way to get it back and return to your dimension is to collect Mortys, obtain badges, and challenge them. The world consists the over world and all other mini demensions. The Overworld consists of the Council of Ricks (Indigo Plateau), Salesman Rick’s (PokeMart), the Morty Healing Center (PokeCenter), and Morty Daycare (Bill’s PC…you thought I was going to say the daycare guy), and the Dimensional Portal. After stepping through the dimensional portal you are taking to another world full of “trainers” and other Rick’s to defeat and obtain their badges…the only way out of these dimensions is to either beat that world’s Rick or after defeat be flown back to the overworld by Birdman.

My favorite is the Hammerhead…I really want the Cat Morty though

In a multiverse full of Hundre…ok, 82 Mortys (maybe with a possibility for more) it’s fun to build your team and help them evolve to their full potential, which not only means training them but also literally forcing them to evolve by combining two like Mortys at the “Daycare.”

Scruffy Morty + Scruffy Morty = Unkempt Morty

Along with the various Mortys, spread out in every world are small kiosks for Blips and Chitz and crafting stations. Blips and Chitz act like vending machines, you redeem a ticket and get a few random items and a fresh new Morty. The crafting stations are used to combine the random items scattered throughout the worlds to create more helpful items from health serums to Mr Meeseeks boxes. With that I need to get back to training, I need 3 more badges to face the next Council Rick…so go, play this fantastic free game, and be the best Rick there ever was! Free on Android and iOS
